Roanoke Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
I Found A Nest Of Baby Skunks, What Do I Do Now?

What to Do with a Nest of Baby Skunks

Baby skunks should always be with their mother. Sadly, there are times when the mother is not around for one reason or another. When you find a seemingly abandoned nest of baby skunks, you need to figure out what to do.

You cannot leave the babies there, of course. That would lead to them suffering and dying, a fate you do not want to force on them.

However, you might not know how to deal with them. Knowing the right course of action will help you in doing this properly and safely. You can do what is best for you and for the skunks without causing harm or trouble.

Look Around

Before doing anything with the skunks, look around the property. You want to make sure that the mother is not around and is not coming back. If the mother is still in the area, you do not want to remove them from their nest.

If the mother is away from the nest, and is going to return, there is no reason to remove the babies. Removing them is only going to be unnecessary trouble.

If you know that the mother is not going to return, you can move forward with figuring out what to do. Otherwise, let the mother take care of them when she returns.

Removing the Babies

With gloves on, put the babies into a box. A secure, somewhat large box is good enough to hold them. Give them a blanket and keep them in a safe area of your property.

Do not handle them too much. Baby skunks are babies, but they are still wild animals. You do not want to put your health at risk for any reason.

Contact the appropriate services for removing them. There are services that will take care of abandoned baby animals, giving them the care and nurturing they need.

These services are widely available and do great work. In most cases, they will come pick up the animals without any problem. Contact them immediately to have them handle this for you.

Whenever you find a baby skunk nest, you should practice caution. After making sure the babies have been abandoned, be careful with them and get them to the appropriate services. Rehabilitation services will care for the baby skunks and raise them until they can go back into the wild on their own.
